Is Bottled Water A Blessing or A Curse?

With all the natural resources rapidly depleting because of the steady increase in population and technological advancements, some things are now being packaged and sold, like the goodness of water.

Bottled water is now becoming one of the most popular beverages despite the fact that many people still have access to clean and safe drinking water. Companies say that contamination has posed threat to the safety of drinking water and so there is a need to purify and sell this for a minimum cost, while environmentalists claim that bottled water is unnecessary and only causes more environmental harm. Others say that bottled water is just an instrument to show the status symbol of a person—the wealthy are the ones who patronize bottled water while the poor settles for tap water.

Now let us take a look at this debate and know the pros and cons of buying bottled water.

Pros:

  • In terms of convenience, the bottled water is a runaway winner because of its built-in portability which allows you to carry it wherever you go. It is also resealable and refillable, making it ideal for hiking and other activities which require large quantities of water while on the move.
  • Though it is still debatable, most people see bottled water as safer than drinking tap water. In developing countries where water contamination is high, bottled water may be advantageous and safer. But in developed countries, the contaminants in tap water supply may just be equal to or a little less than those in bottled water.
  • Bottled water is also beneficial when you are planning to store water for future use. In emergency situations, bottled water is a great help especially when typhoons, floods and other natural calamities devastate the area where you live. Since tap water sources are submerged in the flood, it is definitely safer to drink water from the bottle than to get it from the faucet.

Cons:

  • The most evident drawback of bottled water is the amount of waste it creates. You can recycle and re-use plastic water bottles but the process of recycling needs a lot of energy when dealing with millions of bottles generated annually. When bottled water is shipped, transportations which burn fuels are required, and these add up to the greenhouse gases emission into the atmosphere.
  • Definitely, purchasing bottled water is not cost-effective. Tap water is way cheaper, even free when consumed in public establishments.

In general, people’s perception differs greatly from one another. Some may see bottled water as a real blessing while others, particularly those concerned with the environment, see it as a curse. However, like any other things in the world, the use of bottled water has its advantages and disadvantages. So, it is up to you to assess this and decide whether the pros outweigh the cons.
